Because there's nothing that I've ever posted on Usenet in
my own name that I wouldn't be prepared to reveal or own up
to at work.

In that case, if you really are who you say you are, and not
seeking to impersonate someone simply in order to damage their
reputation as much as possible, then IMO you should seriously
seek professional help of some kind.

All University Departments are competing for limited funds, nowadays
more than ever. Given which, I'm sure your colleagues in your
Department would be more than pleased should your self confessed
activities come to the attention of your Funding Committee at the
time of your next review. Never mind any sponsors of any endownments
or scholarships your department currently enjoys. Who might look rather
less kindly on any such "youthful pranks".

It seems to have escaped your attention but activities such
as -

stealing text-books from bookshops as a student

throwing a brick through a supermarket window

admitting as much in public

to name but three of many, are not simply a reflection on you
personally, but on your Department, on any sponsors of your Department
and on the prestige of the Institution which currently employs you.

The fact that you should not only post such admissions on a
public forum, but should do so using an identity which can be
easily verified and linked to your place of work, is almost
beyond belief.

That's not to say, of course, that I haven't used pseudonyms in the
past. However, when I post in my own name, I post without compunction.- Hide quoted text -

Switchback Adams, they call him. One minute he'll be nuzzling your
toes with sycophantic ecstasy, the next he'll be stabbing you in the
back with an orgiastic frenzy.

Thank god he's stupid and predictable.
