People head for the UK for a variety of reasons. Maybe the only
foreign language they speak is English. Maybe they already have
friends or family there. Maybe there's already a community of their
nationals installed there, so they can hope for lodging or work.
Then by definition they're not refugees.
They're not refugees, they're asylum-seekers.
A refugee just wants to get the hell out of country where they are.
The word has no relevance to the law. They're asylum-seekers.
Anyone who's trying to get to a specific country is a migrant.
Or not. Depends.
Believe it or not, most asylum-seekers who arrive in France intend to
stay in France, and make their applications there. France takes in
more asylum-seekers per capita that the UK does. But those are the
ones from Africa and North Africa, for example, who speak a bit of
French (or a lot) and who come to join up with established communities
of their nationals already in France.
That works well, doesn't it? Been to the Parisian banlieue recently?
Any one in particular, or did you just want your friends to see how
you know foreign words?
