I'm left thinking though - is he now going to just get on with it
and put aside his 21st century angst ??

No, he's dead.

He only dreamed he'd committed suicide. He's now back in the coma.

He only regained consciousness for around 20 seconds.

We never actually saw him get out of the bed, just walk fully
clothed out of "Hyde" ward. That very coincidence points to
the fact that he only dreamed he got out of the bed and resumed his
2006 life, if only temporarily.

He walks around in 2006 in exactly the same way as he walked
around in 1973, in a dream.

What you suggest is actually much better than the ending we got - it makes
more sense and is less distressing because Sam is still alive (albeit in a
coma) and doesn't take his own life or consciously leave his mother. I
suspect that is the ending that the writers originally planned, given that
they had only envisaged Life on Mars as a standalone project.

However, now that commerce has reared its ugly head and a spin off series
demanded, they had to find a way for the imagined 1973 characters to
continue.

....

The way I see it working is that Gene Hunt was a real copper working
in London in the 80's. He was charged with malpractice - eventually -
and his case was featured in the newspapers and TV at the time.
At the time Sam was a teenager and read about the case. He might
even subconsiously have remebered what Hunt looked like from the telly
all that time ago. Sam's dream is an combination of what he remebers
of the Hunt case, combined with 70's cops shows that he'd seen as well.
He got Hunt mixed up with Regan in his dream in other words.

....

The way they chose was to have Sam wake up and recover in 2006, go
back to work and record an account of his coma into a tape recorder.

The female psych-trained copper who was assigned Sam's case heard the
tapes
and they had a deep effect on her, so much so that when she has her
accident
(yawn) and ends up in a coma (yawn) she too imagines the same characters.

So in my sceanario the 80s Gene Hunt is the real thing. We're
actually in the 80's in Ashes to Ashes. They could even have the
teenage Sam Tyler reading about Gene Hunt's case in the newspaper.
Where the new loony woman copper fits in I'm not quite sure. She
could have just ordinary amnesia just so as to confuse things and
we might not see the story from her point of view at all.

I originally though Sam would eventually wake up in 2040. Nothing
that's happened so far disproves that, as we don't actually know
what year he did briefly wake up - except Morgan was "normally" dressed.
But if he only dreamed he walked about in his 2006 clothes,
then it could have been any year.
