Beacause, as with witnesses in trials, there's always the temptation
to sensationalise and gild the lily.

If they claim they were tortured that will make a better story
than saying they were well-treated. Geddit?

The UK's dipolomatic relations with Iran - which to some extent will
need to reflect public opinion - shouldn't rest on hyped up newspaper
"torture and tells ".
