Surely you of all people know what 'standby' means?
It just means you have to switch on *manually* rather
than using your remote.
Many electronic items (most DVD recorders and almost all PVRs being good
examples) will not operate properly like that. They are designed to "give
a service" 24 hours a day, even if not being directly used.
Starting them from fully unplugged requires a complete re-boot - which can
take a long time - and which occasionally does not work at all, requiring
work to be done on the machine.
Fairy nuff.
Come to think of it my Freeview box is like that.
You can't actually switch it off as such, apart from
at the plug.
Like most things.
But you still don't have to go down to the cellar!
Yeah, I wasn't being strictly serious there...
