I wonder what the aliens that people say they see and have been
abducted by would look like had Spielberg decided not to use the grey

Great film for its time - saw it at the pictures

I thought the 'classical' image of the aliens predated CE3K?

Yes they used to have space helmets and antenna in the 50's and 60's
and flew in saucers.

in comics and on tv maybe, but the reason the aliens look the way they do
in
CE3K, is because Spielberg based them on the alien descriptions in the
reports
that inspired the whole movie in the first place, thats why that all seems
to tie together too nicely

think of it this way, ET made more of an impact in film terms globally,
and
yet its still those darn little grey dudes who get spotted all the time :)

Aw

Nicely built on by Dark Skies of course, too.

What I love about CE3K is it shows / implies the global impact of an alien
first contact with the world as a whole. I'd always interpreted the
arm-waver/scientist/red suits as a kind of UN global force as opposed to an
American force.

The film leaves a number of big questions:

- What did they want?
- Why were they here? The first encounter was said to be 1945. Possibly the
beginning of the nuclear and space travel age?
- Why come all this way just to do a light show on a remote mountain in
relative secret from the Earth's population?
- Since only one invitee made it to the invite, didn't this *** up their
plan of inviting specific chosen people?
- What was the purpose of the abductees? To gain knowledge of us before
beginning diplomatic relations?
- What was the point of turning up, having a meeting for 20 minutes, and
then buggering back off into space?
- Who were the red suits? Presumably some "Noah's Ark" selection of
diplomats, scientist, and fair representatives of the Earth?
- Would not supplying the aliens with people, on faith, weaken our position
*if* the aliens turned out to be hostile since they would then have
knowledge and leverage over us, and we would know next to nothing about them
apart from 1, look cute, 2, likes to kidnap kids *without* their mothers, 3.
plays the organ, 4, causes power black-outs and plays chicken with
airliners.

Does anyone know any of the answers to the above?

I would love to meet some aliens as wonderful as these. Wouldn't there be a
50:50 chance that the aliens might be more the, erm, Sigourney Weaver or
Predator type?
