More seriously, a lot of call centres treat abusive members of the public as
health and safety risks and can take action against them. This can range
from refusing to send people round for things like maintenance or meter
reading to legal action. The typical person working in something like
outbound sales is a wage slave with strict commission targets to hit, so the
*real* best way to get rid of them is to politely decline what they're
selling. If they keep ringing, just hang up. If they block the line by not
hanging up at their end, press recall, and hang up when you get the dial
tone. The phone will ring a few times, and when it stops the line will be
clear.
