You do need dual CPUs if you want to be doing anything useful while

anything during burning is a surefire way to create an attractive drinks

But you can't dedicate a particular CPU to burning your disc. Besides, HD
transfers from other significant tasks may interrupt the burning.
Well you can if you want - choose Set Affinity... in your task manager
list to specify the CPU you want some task to run on. Not that it would
make much of a difference but you can do it.

The thing is - if I fancied a game of, say, Half Life 2, but needed to
burn a disc for something urgently (not that I'd really need to) then
I'd do the disc first and then play the game afterwards.

It'd take no more than 15 minutes to burn the DVD so that's the kind of
thing you could set going while going for a pre-game dump :)

I suppose it depends on your work patterns. Some people would single task even if their machine multi-tasks. But I often find myself often doing 2 or even 3 things at once. I might set off a build or something intensive, while browsing, or downloading something else.

Dual core is a waste of time if you only do one thing at a time or light requirements, but if you do set things off and then want to be doing something else in the meantime, then dual core is the way to go. As it only costs a little extra, it is money well spent for power users.

I suppose it could be roughly compared to 4WD. If you live in the town and do nothing but drive from A to B you don't need 4WD. You wouldn't notice the difference even if you engaged it. But if you use your vehicle day after day on demanding terrain you sure as hell do.
