As soon as kids are involved, people just become rabid and irrational.
Fred.
It's neither rabid nor irrational. Reason doesn't come into this
at all. It's all pure emotion. Nurturing the young, and therefore
the helpless, has a high survival value in any species. Species in
the habit of killing off all of their young would die out pretty
quickly*. Which is why many people feel a warm glow when looking at
fluffy kittens, lambs, calves etc. never mind babies. And why others
may feel especial repugnance against people who eat veal, baby lamb
etc. Never mind detesting peadophiles.
This is all purely emotional and something which people have
no real control over. Or put another way, in humans as in
animals it governed purely by hormones.
And exactly the same emotions as are triggered in persuading
"mums" that the extra vitamins and calcium in total *** like
Sunny D and Dairylea dips are "just what kids need".
It's also something which is easily exploited by those who know
how to press the right buttons. This has probably always been
the case, except that it's never been taken advantage of in the
past by the likes of the tabloid press (with the TV now having to
follow in their wake ). In former days papers like the "Daily
Mirror" would have probably taken a more "responsible" attitude,
for fear of stirring up vigilantes and the like.
It's also the reason why IMO it very unwise to get into arguments
with people about the welfare of children. Cycle helmets for one,
are a total nonsense and do nothing to promote safety.( Half
of them don't even put them on properly and so increase the risk
of spinal injury or a broken neck.) But the advocates of helmets
i.e the manufacturers, use the welfare of children as a lever
to try and force helmet legislation on everyone. Thus painting
anyone who objects as a child hater, in an argument its impossible
to win.
Nowadays with Murdoch, the gloves are off. He'll press whatever
buttons are necessary to line his own pockets, and if its a daily
diet of peadophiles than that's what we're going to get.

Swans are very solicitous for the welfare of their cygnets, which
are a grey colour. However in most cases, as soon as those same
cygnets turn white in the autumn, the adults will chase them away.
Because having too many adult swans in any one stretch of water means
less food all round. Other animals selectively kill some of their
young - and male lions kill the offspring of other males.
