I'll be honest with ya, mate - the pair of them put in me in mind of
the infamous duo who embodied everything wrong with English football
over the last decade or so ... Scholes and Pearce : both EXCELLENT
at losing possession, neither capable of playing anything
resembling a technical/off-the-ball game.
Isn't it about time we changed the culture of anti-'cleverness' that
prevents us playing a competent Mediterranean style game ?
It's the same with our rugby - we simply don't sufficient
off-the-ball running to create a competent attacking game - let's
take a leaf out of the Pacific-islander style game.
Our problem is that the only one doing any useful running is the
bloke with the ball.
Someone I know always maintains that 'Football (in the UK) is a game
played BY yobs, FOR yobs'.
It sounds very much to me like you're a rugby fan who crawls out of
the woodwork every 2 years when England are in the World Cup or
European Championship and professes a vast knowledge about the
beautiful game.
Scholes: excellent player, and I'm a Man City fan
Pearce: superb left-back who hasn't been matched in England since he
retired Lampard: excellent player who had a bad game yesterday
Crouch: average player, IMO, and shouldn't be in the squad at all
I thought you were going to give me a serious answer.
I have, I'm accusing you of being a rugby fan who knows little about the
beautiful game.
Not just say that these *** players are great, FFS !
If you're going to accuse players that I consider to be very good players of
being *** then I will stick up for them.
And why haven't you address the central point of my post ?
The thread title is about whether Lampard and Crouch should be in the
England squad and you've then gone on to mention Scholes and Pearce, so I
thought your central point was about good and bad players.
Perhaps because you don't understand ?
Or maybe because you do, but suffer the same myopic selectivity which
pervades the English football culture ?
The two points you seem to be making contradict themselves. You're slagging
off Crouch and Lampard and then saying we should play a
continental/technical style of play. The fact that Crouch and Lampard are in
the squad is because Sven considers them to be among the best English
players, and Crouch is a good example of why the English game doesn't suit
the continental/technical style of play, because he's about as technically
gifted as Mr Bean - loads of Sunday league players could have put that
volley away yesterday.
We should play to the strengths of the English style of play, which is to
harry the opponents, get stuck in, then rely on the more technically gifted
players when attacking, such as Beckham. And Rooney is a good example, he
may be very naturally gifted, but his style is very, very English - it's not
silky skills like Ronaldinho, he just gets the ball, puts his head down and
goes at defenders.
