This topic often comes up on "Ask Jack" and various expensive remedies
are suggestsed.
As a matter of course, when you come to sell / give away / chuck an old
computer you should overwrite the hard drive with a freeware tool like
autoclave or DBAN (then reinstall the operating system if the new user
wants it). If people can't even be bothered to do this when something
dodgy has found its way onto their hard drive, I'm guessing they don't
do it as a matter of routine!
I'm reminded of a story on Watchdog (from the Anne Robinson and Alice Beer
days) when someone bought a "refurbished" computer from Dixons. They turned
it on, had a look at the HD, and found all kinds of personal files from the
previous owner. After a call to a private detective they got in touch with
the previous owner and he wasn't too impressed.
I remember that one. If I was selling/giving away an old PC to someone
outside of the family then I'd go to the trouble of buying a new hard
drive. They're not expensive and the peace of mind would be worth more.
That said, by the time I've finished with a PC, after a few years, it
wouldn't be worth anything anyway and I'm not going to buy a new hard
drive just so I can give it away to a charity so for one I dumped at
the tip a few years ago which was really beyond use, I removed the hard
drive, put it under a tap and smashed it to bits before binning that
separately.
