The Windows Nagulator is here.

I've encountered two people who can't get Windows updates because
their PCs were installed or reinstalled at some time in the past by
people who thought they were being helpful and/or clever by using
volume licence keys. Once these keys become public knowledge,
Microsoft add them to the banned list and all the PCs that use those
keys (including the original genuine owners of the keys) get blocked.
In one case, the PC had its retail licence key sticker on the side,
so why anyone used a different volume licence key is anyone's guess!
I feel like the messenger of doom having to say "to be legal, you'll
have to buy a new copy of Windows and you'll need to have Windows and
all your apps reinstalled to make it use the new key".
This last point is debatable: when I saw the "make yourself legal"
link (or whatever the wording is) on the error screen that you get
while doing an update, the accompanying text seemed to imply that you
just paid your money and they'd make your PC legal, but when I spoke
to Microsoft Support in Ireland, they were adamant that they only
solution was a total reinstallation of Windows. So I'm confused: if
you buy a genuine retail licence, can you "introduce" it to your
exisiting PC or must you do a clean installation?
I think your initial understanding is correct. I've read the blurb on the
Microsoft website and the deal seems to be: you pay £92.00. For that fee
they email you a squeaky clean product key which enables you to legalise the
Windows installation "immediately" (quote). They also scan your installation
and warn you if there are any problems with it.
They then send out a CD of Windows so that you can do a clean install if you
need to, now or in the future.
It's actually not a bad deal! (Thinks of going legit ...)
