Be sure to weigh up prices with branded pre-assembled machines when
following this route through. I've been self-building my own PCs for a
decade now, but for the first time this year bought two high-spec boxed
PCs off the shelf (PC World) because it would've cost approx £250 more
(per machine) to buy the same components and assemble them myself.
Presumably manufacturers are managing this through bulk-buying of
components? Even the small-time PC corner-shops can't compete.
I've set a budget and really need to shop around to see whose got the
best spec for the money

I'd recommend having a look in Staples where the PCs change quite often so
they don't list them on the site so a trip in-store is required*

Same at PC World. The high-spec systems I bought weren't on their site
(just checked and they're still not). Most of the stuff listed online
seems to be dirt-cheap, mid-to-high spec HPs with cheap monitor,
keyboard and mouse. Dunno if you've seem the keyboard and mice on those
things in store. Just *appalling*. They should just remove them from
the package and save the customer another £1.99 off the total cost.

:)

Just saw this one advertised on TV.

"Wow, how do you do all that for £499?"
"Massive buying power and a *** graphics card* which means you'll be back
next week to buy an upgrade!"

(*The 256Mb aspect of it, and other ATI cards, makes it seem like the nVidia
card in a PC from Staples I asked about here a few months back. Basically, it
was a 64Mb card and just stole the rest of the memory from the PC's memory as
and when it needed it. Plus, this ATI one is bottom of the range compared to
the others in the series. You'd probably get more power from "Integrated
graphics card" if it's not that already but with a fancy name :)

The odd high-spec gem (£650-£750 price range) appears to be tucked away
in store, but why? Probably because an added monitor wouldn't make it
appeal to average, clueless buyers specifically targeted in the ads by
PCWorld?

Precisely. When I showed the Medion PC at Aldi to a few people they all said,
because it wasn't for them, that it was too expensive for what they needed.

Some people are born to shop at PC World :)

Also, there's those Aldi special offers.

(*The Stockport one recently changed location from being opposite Currys and
Toys R Us to the old Office World building. In case anyone has been in both,
the old one seemed reasonably welcoming whereas the new one just seems cold -
sort of the difference between WHSmiths and Woolies :)

I always thought Woolworths in Manchester got quite hot? Or was that
just in Manchester 1979? >-)

Didn't know about that until I checked the link below. I thought there
might've been something steaming off the rubbish in the streets during the
strikes in 1979 (I was 7 so my memory of that time is a bit hazy), and that
while the streets smelt of ***, just 15 years later Liam Gallagher turned up
to talk it and sing like it :)
