3%, where do you get that figure from?

Jeremy Clarkson.

Ah, an unbiased source then.

Since around 1850 when the Little Ice Age is generally accepted
to have ended there has been a steady increase in CO2 emmisions
from mankind. This is not in dispute and neither is the fact that CO2
is a greenhouse gas. Certainly since then and the present the rise
in temperature has not been steady as particularly between 1940
and 1980 the temperatures plateaued or even fell. However this is
thought to be due to smoke particulates in the atmosphere reflecting
and scattering the sun's heat. Once we cleaned up the atmosphere
the temperatures rose once again. The rise since 1980 has been
striking. The rise of India & China as major industrial powers only
compouns the problem. Of course there is no definitive *proof* that
we have caused this but to wait until that may be too late. But we have
pumped vast amounts of a known greenhouse gas into the atmosphere
and temperatures keep rising. How suspicious is that?

If you want to cut down on greenhouse gasses, cut down on methane by chopping
down all the forests. Oh no, everyone's planting plants and trees all over the
place - cue extra methane that isn't helping.

Yes, the production of methane by living plants is a very recent
discovery. Hitherto iy had only been thought that it was produced
by decaying material under anaerobic conditions such as in swamps.
But the point about planting trees is to 'lock up' C02 and remove
it from the atmosphere. Even when the tree dies it only releases back
what it has taken, so it's carbon neutral.
Any anyway even if you cut down all the forests to save on methane
emissions, what would you replace them with? Concrete?
Which takes enery and C02 emissions to manufacture.....

Mankind's fucked either way, in many thousands of years to come, but there's
nothing we can do to realistically stem the inevitable.

Perhaps so, but what happens when all the raw materials you
use to make that stuff begin to run out and all that stuff that you
could have recycled is now buried in landfill?

How many thousands of years will it be before that happens?

The oil from which we ultimately derive so many chemicals won't
be around for that long. Neither will metals such as zinc and copper
unless they are recycled. There is only a finite amount of useful
'stuff' that can be dug out of the ground and it;s crazy to only
use it once then bury it in the ground again.

Ok, so gas will run out. Fine - I'll use electricity.

You will have your little joke :)

Why, will that run out too?

Um, electricity is generated from gas, amoungst other fossil fuels.
I assumed you were joking.
