Anyone know what those two things are?

IEEE 802.1x is a standard designed to enhanced the security of WLANs, so
it's definitely related to your wireless adapter.

Are you sure you haven't disabled wireless connectivity in the BIOS?
(It's worth checking if a BIOS setting exists and that it's enabled
anyway.) What about LAN/Wireless switching? If I plug my laptop into
my home network with an ethernet cable, the built-in switching facility
disables the wireless connection. Once or twice -- until Intel released
new drivers -- this got stuck and left me without wireless connectivity
until I reset it. Also -- if any wireless management software was
installed with the drivers (Intel Proset here), it's also worth poking
around the settings (advanced and otherwise) to see if it's somehow been
disabled.

Hey - Lee's back! :)

The above is exactly what's happened with me, in terms of sticking the
LAN cable in disables the switching. However, I haven't changed
anything in the BIOS myself as per the other post I've just made here.

Horrible, insulting question I know, but some 'puters have a little WiFi
enable/disable switch. Useful on laptops for when you're in the
air...but on Desktops? Seems unlikely...but you know, some people flick
an unlabeled switch just to see what happens. ;)

Nothing I can see on mine.

Those with the urge should go here whenever tempted:

Will do that when I've finished tearing my hair out with this PC :)
