How to Become a TV Writer

I wonder if any here in this group actually work in the media (TV).
If so, what advice could any give on becoming a writer for TV.
I have a young relative who is showing an interest in this. She has
already written some scripts for university reviews etc. I have read
some of her stuff and feel it is pretty good (funny) although I am no
expert.
She is almost certainly going to go in for teaching, as a day job, but
would like to continue writing and chase the dream. Is this a realistic
approach?
Her parents obviously want to see her in a steady job first and this is
not a problem for her. She is a nice down to earth girl with no
pretensions.
I know it is possible to submit scripts through the BBC website and
they do promise that, at the very least, they will be read, but I do
wonder how many get accepted this way and go on to be commissioned.
Are there any other avenues to get yourself noticed? How about other
TV channels.
How have others made it in to TV writing. Is their a typical approach?
Any advice gratefully accepted.
