Unicode?
Right.

Investigation complete.

Encoding was set to Western European, which I would have
expected to cope with French accents and German umlauts, both
French and German being Western European langages.

the problem is that there are lots: the iso standard (8859-1) and
several (with similar function) from m$. these codes are *not*
compatible with any unicode transfer format.

I have reset it successively to Unicode-7 and Unicode-8. It
continues to display as before.

what you actually need is utf-8 (from your description of what you're
seeing), which is a transfer encoding.

if fact, if rosie's posts are set up right, they ought to be instructing
your newsreader, but maybe your newsreader was sulking because of
something else.

I am not going to bother spending more time with it. Certainly
it comes out looking peculiar, but as long as I can understand
it, that's really all that matters, isn't it?

it's a waste of your brain power to have to remember that capital-
a-tilde copyright-sign means e-acute, whereas (for example) capital-
a-tilde paragraph-sign means c-cedilla. that's a load of old
cobblers -- your computer ought to do it for you.
