Encoding was set to Western European, which I would have
expected to cope with French accents and German umlauts, both
French and German being Western European langages.

But, for unknown reasons, it doesn't.

Can you understand why I'm so angry?
Yes. That is why the encoding of my newsreader doesn't really
seem to matter all that much.
