Radio 4, Monday 14:15?15:00: "Afternoon Play. The King ofMy own thoughts exactly, as I shouted at the radio. But
Sootland. By Richard Hurford. A boy and the young Queen
Victoria go on an adventure." As any fule can see by
checking the listings. Except that the continuity
announcer not only announced it as "The King of Scotland"
but even back-announced it as such at the end after the
mistake had become painfully obvious. Who is it proofreads
these scripts? And where do they find such dimwitted
announcers?
presumably neither the announcers nor those who produce their
scripts listen to the programmes or look at the listings.
I think the BBC could save money by doing away with
continuity announcers completely. I have begun to find them,
and programme trailers, more and more irritating. Perhaps
it's my age.

the programme and they seem to be taking a minute away from the
pod.
there anyone younger hereabouts?
Me, I'm only 61, and irritated. Mainly because they keep repeating
them, I don't mind being told once.
thoroughly irritated by their particular brand of continuity announcers,
who are treated as if they were each presenting a programme of their
own, instead of just introducing the next programme. They often add an
extra 3 minutes to the beginning and ends of downloads - I find it so
annoying that I prefer to cut off the beginning of the programme I want
to listen to rather than have to listen to the inanities uttered whilst
Alex hands over to Michaela and Michaela blabs on about who she'll be
handing over to in the next couple of hours. AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH.
(Sorry about that, I've been keeping it in a long time..)
Well ranted, I feel just the same. At least when you're listening again you can
fast forward.
Do you think they actually need to add the extra 3 minutes? But that would mean
that even programmes from the '50s like Journey into Space weren't the full 30
mins, which would disprove my feeling that the crud is getting longer and
longer. Certainly when I got cable and could at last listen to radio 4, after
over 25 years of SW WS only, I was surprised by the amount of trailing that had
crept into the programme interstices in the intervening time. Could do a bit of
research, perhaps, timing a sample of BBC7 offerings from various decades.
<Swerve>
And whilst I'm ranting, I got very annoyed to hear on early editions of
the R4 news bulletins that "Nissan is set to announce a major investment
in its Sunderland plant", with in depth discussions by the business
staff about it. I understand the Toady prog didn't want to miss out on
discussing an important development in British industry but I still
found the wording ridiculous. Wait until the flaming announcement's been
made, before discussing it. I hate this "news anticipation", which
happens far too often. OK. rant over. Sorry.
They're working, as so much of the time, from press handouts.
