Really?? Pickup, to me, conjures up an image of a vehicle without a
top, where the back drops down and the inside is decorated with bits of
baked-on concrete, wood bark, various unpleasant colours of paint and
something unmentionable which has leaked in the corner.
Do you perhaps mean the slightly larger thing which is essentially a
small open lorry, body of a Transit or suchlike towing a big empty
pan, possibly tilting, a thing such as builders might use

which is what I get if I image-google "pickup"?

The former is not really personal transport and I can't see why a
milkman/pigman (as opp to his employer) would need one; whereas,
seemingly, a pickup is American-style cool. The ones I see in the
streets (if not on American films) are luxury models not working
vehicles.
Aha! I've worked it out. You don't live in Gloucestershire! The white
one is what is meant by pickup round our way. I imagine Jazzer has one
because once used, they can be picked up (sorry) quite cheaply. I know
people who have bought ex-builder vehicles as personal vehicles because
they are cheap.

To confirm that it's really a pick-up, you need a couple of good ol' boys
from south of the Mason- Dixon line standing in the back occasionally
shouting "Yeehaw" and shooting road signs with shotguns. We get a lot of
that sort of thing here in Cornwall.
:))

A further thought is that the real answer is that Jazzer has to provide
his own pickup to deliver the milk from. After all, who else would be
funding the delivery vehicle? I don't think even Oliver would have run
to that expense.

I´d assume that the pickup was a vehicle borrowed by Jazzer from Home
Farm, since he was hawking Home Farm strawberries. Furthermore,
Moike's milkround pre-dates Oliver's dairy enterprise, so I assume
that vehicle is Moike's. Which leaves open the question of Jazzer's
transport arrangements. I'd imagine he uses the bus, but given
sufficient accomodating housewives, that might be unnecessary.

The first time he picked up Annette (was it that kind of a pick-up?) he offered to take her to wherever it is that he lives (Felpersham?), so I'm presuming he has a vehicle of some kind. I was less clear, though, why she agreed to stay over at his place in order to avoid coming back by taxi - how was she going to get home the next day anyway?

He could take her, having not just been drinking?

But in that case how did he get her back to Felpersham in the first place? I'm assuming that any drinking would have been done before setting off (J having different priorities once they got home).

Ah well, I think people do have a pint or two somewhere they have to drive back from but then having got back to Felpersham or Borchester or wherever it is that he lives (I got the impression wherever it was was where he lives, but I suppose I could be wrong) he could leave the car/pickup and they could continue drinking somewhere within walking distance of bed.

Ah yes, I had forgotten that he said they could check out the nightlife of Felchester or Borsham first. That makes sense.
