Right. That's it. I'm fed up getting lost when I have to drive to
unfamiliar
places with no passenger to read a map for me, and it'sjust happened
again,
driving off to play for my morris dancing girls. I need a GPS. I did find
the place in the end, but I wasted the best part of half an hour going up
and down the wrong road before I found the right one.

So . . . anyone here got any advice/experience/tales of woe regarding GPS
systems? What should I go for? I can't afford top-of-the range equipment,
but I know if I get the cheapest model I'll probably regret it. What's
the
deal with keeping the maps updated and so on?

I finally bought one a couple of months ago.

Being a cheapskate[1] I bought one similar to this...

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146672

That looks good, but I suspect my other half wouldn't be happy if I bought a
no-name thingy. Which is odd, as he doesn't even drive, but there ya go . .
.

(look at the comments from previous buyers)

for 50GBP & replaced the supplied software with tomtom stuff - I know
nothing about these things but managed to download the necessary files &
followed the instructions without too many panics.

So you can actually use Tomtom software with other models? I didn't realise
that. What about updates?

<Cough>
"It's amazing wot floats around on the usenet/interwebby thing."
Innit.
<Cough>

TomTom should really develop a "direct-over-cliff" subroutine for when
their software detects that it is running illegally on knock-off
hardware.

Having said that, I was shocked, yes, shocked to see the prices of
Garmin's Edge 705 HR GPS device. I really fancied having one for my
bicycle, but it costs nearly as much as the bike did. And that without
maps!

Some sectors of the market badly need some competition. Sadly, that
competition is only coming from the counterfeiters at the moment.
