Re: OT - ask EU: Firefox profile location

I don't understand exactly what's going on there, John, what you
describe in response to my suggestions is somewhat puzzling. But my
guess would be that because you have a quota, Firefox has problems
writing to <Windows profile>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\ and
below. A fresh profile (which I've just created) starts out at half
a megabyte, but I've just noticed that my personal one is a whopping
147 MB, 55 MB alone taken up by a file "urlclassifier3.sqlite" which
is the list Firefox downloads gradually for the "warn of rogue sites"
functions. It doesn't take long before that file grows to a few ten
MB. So that's not surprising, what does surprise me is the lack of
any profiles.ini.

However, as you are not only looking for a way of moving your
profile to a special location but actually moving between
rather different computers, I'd suggest to stop wondering
what's happening in detail and simply switch to Portable Firefox
(http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) which unpacks
itself to whereever you ask it to and stores both the program and
profile location under that place. This assumes you have somewhere to
store some 10s of MBs temporarily, and perhaps a USB stick to move
things to from the temporary space before that space is purged. The
"profile" folder that builds up in there is largely compatible with
the profile folder of a permanent Firefox installation you may want
to build up on one of your private machines, so you can take all
of your settings, bookmarks, download history etc. with you between
these different computers, once you've acquainted yourself with the
folder locations. Only very few settings store absolute paths and
will therefore not transport well, the most often used one is the
folder to download files to so that will reset itself to the Desktop.
