As usual, I processed my mail in Mailwasher and MW duly then opened TB.
I clicked on "get mail". I then got an error message - I don?t
remember the error but it said I might need to close TB and delete
INBOX.msf. I searched for same and found four within TB profiles. I
deleted the one for gmail, which is an account I rarely use, on the
grounds that if it turned out to be inadvisable after all, no harm might
be done. Huh!
Now TB is totally jammed up. At first, clicking on my inbox produced a
message about building the inbox umbrella (possibly history?). Now it
just produces a lot of noise from my computer. The inbox contents don?t
appear, nor do the contents of one of my local folders which has some
unread mail in it. I can?t download any fresh mail. I can hardly type
- characters appear at about one per second. I am typing this in Word
and hope to copy and paste into my newsgroup post.
Any ideas what I can do?
Off to bed now in a sulk, but would be very grateful to get up to some
practical suggestions ?
I get *some* of this problem occasionally, largely as a result of
running T'bird from several computers networked to a single profile.
inbox.msf is an index to your inbox. Deleting it doesn't delete any
messages - they are in the file called "inbox", and T'bird simply
recreates it at the first opportunity, giving you the "building"
message. This can take a bit of time, but usually reappears
eventually without much problem.
So I suspect that you have a bigger problem than just a confused or
corrupted inbox.msf. If rebooting the 'puter doesn't fix it then
maybe you need to back up the profile, reinstall T'bird, and then put
your old files into the new profile that it generates for you once you
are sure that it is working OK.
