These files are created for performance monitoring but can become orphaned during application failures or crashes. I think you can get rid of them if you first stop the "Performance Logs and Alert" service - type services.msc at the Run prompt and then find that service and change it to Manual. Reboot and see if you can delete the files.

No wonder this machine seems to crawl sometimes - there were dozens of processes listed, quite a few on Manual but loads on Automatics. The one called Performance Logs and Alerts was actually on manual already, but there was one called Indexing which looked like what Ralph mentioned (thanks muchly to you too, Ralph) so I put that to Manual and it did the trick.
I'd say I'm one happy bunny but Chris McT would probably be after me with a handful of juniper berries!
