We don't have any other long winter trips planned, but when we go away
again for shorter periods we'll leaving the heating on low - any
suggestions as to a minimum temperature ?

My late uncle's house, which has been unoccupied for a couple of years
now while we sort out probate and fail to sell it, has the central
heating set to 50 or 55 °F through the winter for just that purpose, to
stop mould etc., and it seems to work just fine at that level.

Same here: more to avoid burst pipes, I set the thermostat at around that level
when leaving the London house unoccupied for any length of time. No problems.
The people who installed the double glazing also advised leaving all the
internal doors open when the house was empty, to help move the air around.

My new flat, when built, is going to have some kind of ventilation which
allegedly will cool the flat overnight during hot weather by drawing in air from
the outside and somehow sending it up and out taking the heat with it. As the
windows will be triple glazed I can imagine that this will also help avoid
condescension building up. I can't believe that this system is going to use much
energy, in a canton where you can't install air conditioning unless you can make
a case for it, and they've just announced that all new buildings would have to
meet strict energy saving standards. But I've no idea how it will be work,
presumably there has to be some kind of pump.
