I've been quietly worrying about why one would wish to separate one's
undies from the rest of the wash. What do they get up to, if they're
allowed to mix?

Bras can get hideously twisted through the rest of the wash, and (I've
heard) the wires can get out and impale themselves in the holes in the
drum, leading to expensive repairs. Dangerous things, bras.
