So far has liberty been eroded by this issue that I can't even remember
what the limit for habeas corpus used to be originally, but IIRC it was
nearer three days than three months.

Bear in mind that, as far as I know, no terror suspect has even had to
be held for four weeks before being charged. It is not as if the
streets
are full of evildoers who were allowed to roam free only because of a
pesky lack of time to prepare a case against them.

<languid wave to all that>

MTAAW, but don't forget, there *are* all those terribly sinister Brazilian
electricians.
AIUI Habeas Corpus used to be 7 days, but they manage with 1 in Canada
and 2 in USA, so why can't we do what they do ?

I don't know why I thought at some point it was 24 hours in England. The
first time I remember hearing about it was when I learnt about the Corn
Laws, I think it was invoked then. I'm probably completely wrong.
The whole thing is a farce.

Yes.

When I was in the Northern Ireland Office, I'm sure I remember doing
submissions for extensions from 24 to 48 hours so that rings true to me.
That would have been under the EPA or the PTA I guess, was a long time ago.
