OT: Advice on the network formerly known as British Rail..

It looks as if I'm going to be EasyJetting over to England for a funeral next week. (Aged Aunt, been v ill for v long time, suffered a lot, happy release. My mother's Baby sister, so I really should be there for Ma's and my cousin's sake.) I will probably need to get from Gatwick Airport to Wimbledon and I would rather not hire a car as I would doubtless have a panic attack and be run over by a lorry on the hard shoulder of the M25. I've had a look at the Network Rail journey planner and see that I would have to get trains run by different companies. I've never seen anything so confusing, but maybe it's just I'm not in the mood.. Anyhow, all I want to do is turn up at the station and buy a return ticket. Is that possible, or should I jump through hoops first?
Ooh, the more I look at this whole journey, the less I want to do it. The planning is putting me off it even more.. Greek funerals are far more fun.
