AFAICR, our school (at least for O level) had decided to teach up to
1752 (don't know why that has stuck in my memory; few other dates did,
and I didn't actually do the O level) and no further. What surprised me
was that this was, apparently, a perfectly acceptable (to the powers
that were) decision at the time (1970s).

i don't think my (prep) school had ever done it before, and the
teacher had simply underestimated how long it would all take (we did
the course rather rapidly).

we covered 1688-something or other rather thoroughly (the reign of
queen anne being helped by the fact that the first two books of
gulliver were set for eng lit). i also bought and read the pelican
"england in c18" by plumb, and regurgitated two chapters of that as
answers in the exam. (plumb later served as master of my college, and
i learned when he died that he had a reputation as the rudest man in
cambridge.)
