As my mother used to like to say, "for every gift there is a gin" (or something like that).
Our family pronounces our name with a soft G. (I wish it had been otherwise - it would have saved me endless corrections!) My father's adoptive parents were a mining family from Nottingham.
The only other ones I've actually met pronounced it with a hard G; they run the end-of-run book and magazine stall in Chelmsford market, and were a London family.
When I looked into it - maybe 15 years or so ago? - when there were only about 15 or so of us on-line (around the world), I found that the proportion was about evens.
