I've never possessed a slow cooker.  What is the advantage of it over a
heavy saucepan, simmering?    I'm assuming it does some sort of timing
but that's morefor people out at work all day, isn't it? Like a timer
on the oven?

if you're just out at work you put the cooker on
before you go and it's ready when you get home.

Our latest version has a three way switch "Low" ,"high" and "auto", I
think the latter starts off on high to heat everything up quickly then
reduce to low for the rest.

I think we just use "low" for meat.
The big advantage is that there is a very long window of when it is
ready and not yet ruined. Unlike a roast dinner. Stick something in in
the morning before going out (to work, walking, or Alton towers in the
snow). When you get back at tea time it will be ready. If you get back
four hours late it will still be ready.

We've had a pack of "diced game" from the farmers market for the last
two nights.
