You're right, but I don't think you could ban people from
separating and moving out, even if they couldn't divorce. And
there are ever-increasing numbers of couples like Lilian and Matt
who were never married in the first place.

And there would probably be a lot more people not marrying if they
knew that they could not divorce should the wish to do so arise.


Heh! It wasn't meant to be a serious suggestion! any more than John's
banning sex.

Well, in the same vein, then, let's ban men from dying so much earlier
than women. This creates an unbalanced older generation, dominated by
widows who (understandably) want to stay in homes that are too big for
them, but eventually require small single-person units.

But that's not going to free up the housing stock. What you need is for the
widows (or occasionally widowers) to die of grief soon after their spouses,
making their houses available more quickly. :-)
