Around the 3rd or fourth time I plugged the MiniDisc recorder into the
computer
it recognised it instead as -erme- a MiniDisk recorder and wouldn't let me
go
any further without installing drivers and wouldn't apparently let me go
back to
treating it as an external drive. Am I doing something wrong here?
Have you installed the service packs, or allowed any Windows Updates?
XP suddenly decided that my webcam, which I have been using for 6 years
(four of those on XP), was new hardware and forced me to reinstall the
drivers. It repeated this 3 days later, and the following day, and again
after another couple of days . . . .
Now I've sussed out that it happens each time there is an update . . . . .

Macroshaft works wonders, indeed .. .. ..
Are you plugging it into the same port? I've had problems where each
time you put a particular device into a particular port it demands you
reinstall (non-existent) drivers.
I was plugging it into the same port each time until it went funny on me. Then I
tried plugging it into other ports but it didn't alter anything.
I solved that problem in the way that is probably unhelpful to you.
Yes, I know. And you have been most tactful in the way that you have mentioned
that here. I had always intended to go the way of the penguin one day: I'm the
chap who used to say he'd got Suse 6.4 on his computer - then point to the
bundle of CDs on top of the monitor. I was going to get around to it too -
honest! And if someone had said that in three months time I would be able to
pick up a 2.7GHz PIV for fifty quid then maybe I would have planned something
around it. But it all happened in a moment: and suddenly there's this Windows
computer on my kitchen table.
