I could do with a bit of guidance on Ccleaner. I downloaded it some time
ago on the advice of umrats, but frankly I'm too scared to run it because I
don't know what all that stuff is so I don't dare delete it. I'm not too
bothered about keeping web pages, but I've no idea what a cache is, and if I
delete cookies won't my various sites fail to recognise me? I don't really
want to have to re-register every time I go to harmless but useful places
like Gramofile. And deleting something as important-sounding as a registry entry fills me with terror.
Hints on getting rid of utterly redundant or possibly harmful stuff but not
messing up my computer's workings would be welcome. (I run AVG, Ad-Aware,
Spybot and Comodo, btw).
CCleaner is, in my experience, safe to run and let it delete what it suggests. The best thing is to close all other applications first, so it can empty the cache files. All that a cache is, in the case of your web browser, is a temporary copy of a page or file that is stored on your copy so that when you go 'back' to a page it doesn't have be downloaded off the internet again. You can set a limit on the amount of space for cached files if you are short of disk space and (depending on your browser) clear them automatically when you shut down.
As for cookies, if you go to the Options, Cookies tab you can pick which cookies you want to exclude from being deleted. It is usually fairly obvious which ones you want, depending on the sites you use. The worst thing that can happen if you delete a cookie is that you'll have to reenter your password next time you go to the page.
