I just caught up with the Christmas edition of Farming Today, which
was a bit of an "On Your Farm" with an English couple who grow almonds
in Andalucia. I was struck by the fact that the couple pronounced
"almond" differently. She said "AR-mond" (which is how I was brought
up to say the word, while he (and indeed the presenter) went with
AL-mond (first syllable to rhyme with Menzies).
How do umrats pronounce the word?

Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.
ALmond here. And OH takes the mickey unmercifully over it. I'm West
Country by birth if that makes any difference.
