I just caught up with the Christmas edition of Farming Today, which
was a bit of an "On Your Farm" with an English couple who grow almonds
in Andalucia. I was struck by the fact that the couple pronounced
"almond" differently. She said "AR-mond" (which is how I was brought
up to say the word, while he (and indeed the presenter) went with
AL-mond (first syllable to rhyme with Menzies).
How do umrats pronounce the word?
I pronounce it 'AWLmond' these days, which is rather careless of me
because, like Stephen, when I was young I pronounced it 'ARmond' even
though I came from a good old salt-of-the-earth oop north
working-class family and had hell to pay on moving to Hertfordshire on
my eleventh birthday.
There are other words, I think, in which speak-as-you-spell has taken
a firm grip on me since childhood. Others that spring to mind are
'clothes' (was 'close') and 'arctic' (was 'artic').

Welcome back - you appear to have reset yourself to default...

Into my heart an air that kills From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went And cannot come again.
