Ozone, the first allotrope of a chemical element to be described by
science, was discovered by Christian Friedrich Schönbein in 1840, who
named it after the Greek word for smell (ozein), from the peculiar odor
in lightning storms. The odor from a lightning strike is from ions
produced during the rapid chemical changes, not from the ozone itself.

I have a copy of a letter written to The Times (a long time ago) by the
father of the man who married an aunt of my mother's, in which he extols
the virtues of treatment by ozone, and claims that such treatment cured
his deafness!

i used to subscribe to alt.<something>.arthritis, and we had a spammer
in there who extolled the virtues of liquid oxygen as an arthritis
treatment. i presume he meant hydrogen peroxide (which is indeed a
liquid at room temperature, for all that it's not a good thing to
ingest). he was that rare sort of spammer who responds to scornful
followups: we never persuaded him to admit that he didn't (really)
mean liquid oxygen, but otoh it might have been nice to know what he
really did mean.
