Ask UMRA - computing for total beginners

A few years ago I bought my other half a laptop computer. Unfortunately she
hasn't really taken to it. Her work does require her to do emails and write
the odd report on the thing, and I find myself doing quite a lot of hand
holding as she does so. I'm not a born teacher, and things can get a bit
stressful. (-:
Can anyrat recommend a book (that I can buy before Christmas!) that would
help a total beginner who's afraid of the machine? Preferably one that
deals in generalities, rather than how to use version x.y.z of Microsoft
Word (which in her case she has not got).
