So I presented that defense of the registry as a new level of "argument
perversion". We have had the trend for a while that increased data
"hunger" is sold to the public as serving security. Now we are told that
storing more data is even a means of /data/ security. Which is of course
nonsense as a general principle, and even if this extra data is used as
a check before each and every access to the database it still doesn't
make the rest of the data "safe". As my article and the one in the
Guardian article both point out, putting the biometric data on an RFID
chip on a passport exposes it to be read without the passport holder
knowing or noticing. Some encryption scheme would then have to be
broken, but this has already happened with (I think) Dutch passports.
The Guardian says that the data stored about the fingerprints (this
would have to be called a fingerprint fingerprint) has been used to
reconstruct fake fingerprints that were then successfully used.
Apparently they did the break the fingerprint security thing on
Mythbusters.
