(I seldom miss newsgroup followups, though I sometimes wonder what the 'eck they

Bloomin' 'eck, Nick! Are you becoming the New Gilliver - replying to
posts from 2004 and 2005?

What's going on? You've left me wondering what the 'eck you are
following up!
'S'not fair. Google Groups will only let me reply to messages < 2
months old. I can't do any decent Gillivering with that!

But it's interesting, isn't it, that once a "legal" connection with an old
subject has been made, google connects it with the original thread, however old
it may have been. I wonder if there might be a way for googleistas to exploit
this?
You still haven't answered the original question, Gillivering Nick. Did you just decide to clear out your old Drafts mailbox? Or you felt like a Gilliver? (That sounds wrong). I liked your temporary sig, anyhow :-))

It was a pretty fine Gillivery, I must say. The one thing which did let it down was that your standard text included such helpful information as the date of the original quotation. Thus depriving your readers of much confusion as they try to remember the thread.

Drat! I've still got some more new/old threads to exploit: should I strip the
attributions out and send them too?

Please! Have mercy!

I was thinking of two things. First, I've met John (as have many other bbqing
umrats and he's a jolly nice bloke and I would like to enjoy usenet
conversations with him and since a response five months or two years or however
long after the event can't be described as a conversation it's jolly frustrating
- especially as we are missing contemporary contributions from such a jolly nice
bloke. So I thought that maybe, in two months or five years time or whenever
John is reading this month's messages, John might feel the same sense of
discontinuity from my messages that others on umra experience from his. And one
day, when John is reading this message...

.... well that's my point really. I'm talking to you, Serena, in the second
person because I know you are reading this almost as I write it and I am talking
_about_ John in the third person because he's not really here until some time in
the future when he _is_ really here.

So....(<fx>waves frantically</fx> Hello John. I'd really enjoy chatting with you
on umra and I'd really appreciate it if, whenever you are reading this, you
would skip to the front of the message queue and join in with whatever we are
talking about. And if I see you at the next BBQ before you read this then I'll
tell you to look out for this message!

<fx> more waving in John's direction</fx> Part of the reason for my reply was also aimed at John, when he reads this, probably in around 2010. It would make his Gillivering far easier to read if his attributions included the date of the posting he's replying to. First, because it would make it easier to spot that this was an old post and so it wasn't surprising that I didn't remember it. Second, because if I was sufficiently interested to want to refresh my memory, it would be that much easier to find it in Google.
