One Easter I stayed with a Catholic family in Germany and went to
church with them, to the consternation of my local (N Irish
Presbyterian) minister back home. For them, Good Friday was the one day
you went to church to make confession, even if you didn't do it much
for the rest of the year.
The Church requires confession a minimum of once a year, and if only
once a year then preferably at Easter.
ISTR there was a fairly gloomy service on the Friday, compensated for
by a lovely Easter morning mass with a procession and flowers and
lights.
Quite understandable, in view of the events (1) which are being
commemorated/celebrated.
(1) With all due respect to those who don't believe any such events ever
took place.
At some risk of opening a jug of potted worms (see other thread) I thought the
historicity of those events were pretty certain but the interpretation of their
significance were a matter of belief.
