This should not happen. I assume that Mike has just upgraded to Firefox
2.0.0.7, and is using some Windows version?
Use "http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox" to find the
Firefox profile folder. In it you see one folder for each profile. I
don't know how many there are or which is one is used by default. The
file "profiles.ini", which you can double-click to inspect, will tell
you by a line saying "Default=1". Enter the folder belonging to that
profile. Once there, please find answers to the following questions:
- How many files are there whose name includes the word "bookmarks"?
Three - bookmarks.html, bookmarks.bak and bookmarks.html.sbsd.bak
- Are any of these write-protected? (They shouldn't be - choose to view
details in the explorer window, right-click in the title row to include
a column for attributes, look for an R in the attributes)
Don't think so. We didn't really understand what you meant by "choose to view details in explorer window" etc. What Mike did do was to right-click on the file, then properties/attributes and neither hidden nor read-only was checked for any of them.
- Does any of these files seem to contain the lost bookmarks and folders
in a state he would want to preserve? (Open with Firefox to find out. If
yes, you might choose to save that file by copying to some other place
while we are searching for a fix.)
Yes, bookmarks.html.sbsd.bak, which is now copied to the Desktop.
- Is the file localstore.rdf in the profile folder write-protected?
The file localstore.rdf isn't write-protected, though we found it in xxndi9lk.default
- Is anything else acting strange after the updates, or just the bookmarks?
On two of those occasions he also lost the Google customised toolbar. Information about the customised toolbar appears to be in the bookmarks.html.sbsd.bak file along with the bookmarks. Also all the things he had added/personalised on his Google homepage had disappeared and they also seem to be in the same file.
HTH ;)
