After paperback Hell on Wednesday night I thought I probably ought to
have a look at the copy of The Da Vinci Code to which I currently have
access. I almost laughed at the sheer clunkiness of the opening four
words and indeed the entire opening sentence and it went downhill from
there.
I respectfully draw the attention of Umra to the following Language Log
post, and its related articles:

Excellent. Thanks, Chris.
One last comment -
Chapter 48
Long-term umrat Sid's fingers moved lightly and intriguingly over the
keyboard of his laptop. The umrat's mind was irresistibly, chillingly
whirled back to the night before.
He had been reading, and for a moment he thought he detected in the
overblownly overblown prose a sign, a symbol. His eyes showed an intense
glimmer of concentration, but also betrayed something else. An anger, an
irritation, an annoyance and - although his eyes locked with wofe's for only
the briefest of brief instants - she detected there a deep weariness and
pain. Was there something there in the book? Something of meaning, perhaps?
A single competently-written paragraph? The keeper of Shepherds Bush's only
campanile (a word whose origins mystify many but as a renowned scholar of
symbollocks the long-term umrat knew to be an ancient reference to the
Egyptians practice of erecting tents on the banks of their great river)
waited, reading, in the semi-darkness.
No - there was nothing.
Chapter 49
Last night he was reading The Da Vinci Code.

*But today he was not!*
