Snippetry..
There is a satellite dish attached to the house and a black cable with an
F-plug on the end comes into the lounge, as well as the normal aerial. The
previous tenant said when he showed us round that he got good digital
reception by connecting his freeview box to the dish. I've tried and it
didn't work. I don't have an f-plug adaptor so I simply replaced the f-plug
with a normal co-ax one - is this the problem?
Do I need some sort of decoder to go between the satellite cable and the
freeview box? If so, where can I get one?
I suspect he meant Freesat and not Freeview.. Freesat is a free to air
digital service provided by satellite that is available for the price
of a Freesat decoder box and a dish.. Freeview is a free to air digital
service provided in the UHF band by your nearest terrestrial TV
broadcast antenna that is available for the price of a Freeview decoder
box and a UHF antenna of the correct band for the local transmitter ..

Freesat will be a BBC-provided service along the lines described, but
it hasn't yet been launched. What you can get now is "Freesat from
Sky" and one of the downsides is that there is no PVR available for
the system.

Another pedant writes:
There are actually several PVRs available for digital satelite
reception. Your correspondent employs a ReelBox (http://www.reel-
multimedia.co.uk). All the terrestial UK channels bar Channel 4 are
now available FTA (free-to-air) over satelite.

It is true that if you want a PVR for FTV (free-to-view - non-
subscription, but Sky-platform encrypted) channels - such as Channel 4
- then you will need to pay a sub for a Sky+ box. Otherwise wait a
couple of years and Channel 4 will doubtless go FTA like the Beeb and
ITV before 'em.

An ignoramus writes:
What's a PVR? I'm particularly confused as here, a PV is a Procès Verbal, and I know you don't want one of those, it's just trouble..
