Though Alice's "Maybe he'll bring back something amazing." comment the other night worked well I thought.

Yes, it gave us a smil, bu it's a bit contrived - I mean, why on earth would he bring back anything amazing from a business trip to Dublin?

I didn't find it too contrived, in the context. As it was as a penance for missing their wedding anniversary, I assume Alice had something like jewelry in mind.

Also, I noticed a re-hash of the Ruth/David anniversary plot - children being very concerned that their parents ought to be celebrating their anniversary with great enthusiasm, otherwise (the kids assume) the marriage is in trouble. I can't remember either myself, my parents or my children treating anniversaries as an occasion when you demonstrated to everyone that your marriage was really just fine, honestly - in fact, we make very little of anniversaries, except the Big Ones, because we don't really feel we have to prove anything.

It's not something my family made any great fuss over either but plenty of people do, so I don't find it *too* surprising that Brian and Jenny would normally mark the occasion.
