While spitting out some home-made cheese, I heard "Marjorie Clarke"
<dontusethisaddess@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> say
What is the point of all the Uncle Rupert business? Am I AOU in finding it aYou're certainly not alone, and I don't think you're missing the
complete bore? There was all that long speech by Niggle giving us Rupert's
whole CV, and then he wanted to dress up as Uncle Rupert, and now he wants
to build a memorial ... I mean, what's all this about? Is it going to fit in
with some other aspects of the plot in some way, or is it just a desperate
attempt to intruduce a bit of levity into an otherwise heavy and issue-laden
script? So far I just find it irritating, but perhaps I'm missing the point
somehow.
point.
I think it's yet another Beetle-inspired effort to reinforce our
impression of Nigel as a rich twit, with the added bonus that she can
drag Bert into the plot as well, and add a few touches to her
caricature of him as a self-deluding idiot.
She likes caricatures, does the Beetle - it's so much easier than
developing rounded characters.
