After the recent hard drive crash disaster chez Gumrat, we have
bought something called a "My Book Essential hard drive" for the
express purpose of backing up to it. It's a UBS (sorry, USB)
thingy. I'd like to make regular back-ups and I can more or less
understand the instructions in Windows XP, but I've no idea how to
schedule it to back up regularly, or how to just add things which
have changed in the past week, or maybe sort of record over the
last back-up (IYSWIM, clearly my understanding is limited), so
that we don't back up the same stuff again and again, or is that
the point?
Have you tried looking at the Properties of the disk you want to
back up from? In the Tools tab there is a "Backup Now..." button
that calls up the "Backup or Restore Wizard". From there you can
specify the locations you want backed up, the type or backup, and
also a schedule for the backup - daily, weekly, monthly, at startup
etc.
I think this is standard XP functionality, so if the tool that comes
with your external HD doesn't allow scheduling, then I suggest you
use this instead.
Is this in Explorer? Mine only offers to check for errors or defrag.
Snot fair!
It is. Running XP Professional here. Maybe lesser versions don't have
the backup option. Sorry if so.
Some sort of backup wizard is available in my XP Home version of
Explorer, but I can't find an option to do scheduling. Is it just a
question of going far enough through the wizard tool? I backed out as I
didn't actually want to do a backup.
