There's a lot of luck in these things. We once went out on Saturday and came
back Sunday afternoon to find that we'd left the front door not merely
unlocked but open. No problem at all. OTOH on the day when someone forced
our rear frech windows and made off with a bag full of goodies everything

door unlocked during the day when there was someone in the house. Most of
the neighbours did likewise.
I leave my back door unlocked when I'm in, but I have a 6ft fence around
the garden and the gate creaks sufficiently to alert me to anyone coming
into the garden. I do sometimes forget to lock the door when I go out.
When I lived in Hudds, I regularly left the front (only) door unlocked
while I went to the shops. On more than one occasion, I left the keys in
the outside of the door when I went out and forgot to lock up.
