I suspect that it's more that the producers saw how successful the
recent series putting a group of men in a monastery for a few weeks
were and decided that they had to have even more extreme characters
for this one.
I think I heard (CRAFT moment alert) a bit on Front Row in which someone
involved in making the convent prog pretty much admitted that they'd gone
in search of more extreme people as it would make better television, in
her opinion. She thought the monastery prog had been a bit dull.
Just to add to Tony's comments, I had had much the same questions as
Kim and done a bit of googling and found their website (at
<http://www.poorclaresarundel.org/Pages/default.htm>). That talks
about the work that they do and, in addition to various crafts which
are sold in their shop, they produce liturgical vestments and have a
guest house.
Several monasteries in Belgium get some income from brewing beer, and
making cheese to go with it. I spent a very enjoyable day visiting the
Orval monastery, and came away with a couple of cases of their wonderful
beer.
