Blood doping is different to that - I presume you were having some sort
of plasma exchange (for rhesus or something?).
Yep, unnecessary as it turned out.
The idea of blood doping is that you take blood out a week or two before
the race. Then, just like after a blood donation, the body tops up the
missing RBCs from reserves (fluid is just topped up from general fluid
levels, so you drink a bit more to prevent dehydration).
Then, just before the event, you put the RBCs from the first batch back
in. It's not that they hold oxygen while out, it's that with more RBCs
in your blood, you can carry more oxygen around.
Ah, thanks for the explanation.
Next question, would the RBCs returned to the horse add a significant
weight?
